Wet Saunas
Promote Cleansing & Detoxification
|
Some people confuse wet saunas with steam rooms, when in fact the two are very different. Wet saunas are similar to the conventional
dry sauna
we're all familiar with, however, with wet saunas you pour water over the hot volcanic rocks atop the sauna stove. When this water hits the rocks it quickly vaporizes and increases the humidity of the sauna, but not to the point where the sauna is full of steam.

Wet saunas are best for promoting sweating. The hot humid air makes the temperature of the sauna feel that much more intense, causing the body to perspire heavily. This makes wet saunas ideal for detoxification and cleansing. As the body's heart rate increases the blood veins expand and circulation improves – enhancing the elimination pathways. The wet heat from the sauna mobilizes stored toxins which are then excreted through the sweat glands.
When sauna bathing in an unfamiliar sauna, whether it's at a health spa or friends home, be sure to ask if the sauna is truly a wet sauna before dumping water over the
sauna heater.
Some saunas use sauna heaters which are for dry use only and are not intended to be splashed with water. In this regard wet saunas are more versatile as they can be used as a dry sauna or as a wet sauna. To run a wet sauna as a dry sauna simply increase the temperature a little and refrain from pouring water over the hot rocks.
