Prefabricated Saunas
Conventional Sauna or Far-Infrared Sauna
There are a few different types of saunas that you may want to familiarize yourself with first before purchasing your
sauna.
Firstly you must decide whether you would like a conventional sauna or a far-infrared sauna. These two types of saunas are very different. The conventional sauna uses an electric, gas, or wood sauna heater to heat the air and warm the sauna room. In contrast the far-infrared saunas use multiple wall mounted ceramic infrared heating elements which heat the people in the sauna without heating the air. If it's a conventional sauna that you're interested in then read-on, otherwise check out our section on
far-infrared saunas.
Dry Sauna or Wet Sauna
With conventional saunas there are really only a couple of options, a
dry sauna or a
wet sauna.
What determines whether the sauna is dry or wet largely depends on the sauna heater. Be careful, however, not to confuse a wet sauna with a steam room. A wet sauna simply means a small amount of water can be poured over the stones of the sauna heater. This water doesn't create a room full of steam, but instead a quick burst of water vapor which increases the humidity of the sauna. If it's a wet sauna you'd like, be sure the
sauna heater
you purchase can have water poured over it. Some electric sauna heaters are intended for dry use only.
Indoor Sauna or Outdoor Sauna
Another thing to consider before purchasing your sauna is whether you intend to install the sauna inside or out. There are a few
sauna kits
available which are intended to be installed outside. Such saunas can be an attractive addition to any garden or back yard escape. Alternatively, saunas for indoor use can be ideal for that unused corner of the basement. Indoor saunas come in various shapes and sizes. Some of the smaller indoor saunas measure as small as 3 ft x 4 ft, ideal for 1 person; or they can come as large as 10 ft x 11 ft, ideal for 10 people or more.
