Infrared Saunas

If you've been thinking of purchasing a
sauna
then you've no doubt come across ads for the far-infrared sauna. And like so many others you may be confused over the difference between an
infrared sauna
and a far-infrared sauna. Well be confused no more! There is no difference, they are exactly the same thing. Some merchants simply choose to market their infrared saunas as far-infrared saunas.

So why do they use the term far-infrared? The term comes from the spectrum of infrared light that's used in an infrared sauna. That is, the infrared spectrum is divided into three sub-spectrum's commonly referred to as near-infrared (the red light we just can't see), middle-infrared (1.5 to 5 µm), and far-infrared (5 to 1000 µm). The infrared light used in an infrared sauna uses wavelengths between 5 and 25 µm, with a pivot point at approximately 9.3 µm – hence the term far-infrared sauna, as it falls within the far-infrared sub-spectrum. The infrared spectrum itself actually sits between visible light and microwaves, as is seen in the diagram below.
The far-infrared sauna is designed to emit far-infrared light because that's what's best absorbed by the human body. It's this far-infrared light which is absorbed and raises the core temperature of our body. This helps to promote perspiration, thereby encouraging detoxification, increasing metabolic rate, and soothing soar muscles.
